The Canadian AI Safety Institute (CAISI) Research Program at CIFAR is pleased to launch a call for proposals for Catalyst Grant research projects that advance fundamental and applied research into AI Safety. Funded by a $27M contribution to CIFAR from the Government of Canada, the CAISI Research Program at CIFAR is the applied and investigator-led research stream of the broader Canadian AI Safety Institute, which is housed in Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.
Catalyst grants fund high-risk, high-reward research and exceptionally creative proposals with the potential for broad impact in the field of AI safety. Projects will typically be funded for up to $100,000 for one year. By advancing research in this urgent area, we aim to build on Canada’s existing strengths in technical and sociotechnical AI safety research, and to build a community of researchers working on AI Safety across Canada.
We understand AI safety to be a broad, multidisciplinary field that encompasses both technical and sociotechnical perspectives and a range of disciplinary perspectives, including the social sciences and humanities. Proposals may be designed to advance any area of AI safety research. Full details of the call for proposals can be found on the CIFAR website.
The application will launch on the portal on January 30, 2025 and close February 27, 2025 (11:59, AoE). Please ensure to press SUBMIT.
We expect to release decisions in early April 2025.
Eligibility
Proposals may be submitted by one or two Principal Investigators (PIs)
At least one PI must be affiliated with an AI Institute (Amii, Mila, or Vector Institute) as either staff or affiliated faculty
Co-PIs must be affiliated with a Canadian university
