Thank you for your interest in the CIFAR AI Frontiers School 2026 - AI Safety Edition, presented by the CAISI Research Program at CIFAR in collaboration with the Vector Institute, Amii, and Mila. This event will be held in person in Toronto ON, Canada between June 22 and 24, 2026.
The CIFAR AI Frontiers School is a Pan-Canadian, interdisciplinary training program advancing safe, responsible, and foundational AI. The new School model adapts and retains the legacy of the CIFAR Deep Learning + Reinforcement Learning (DLRL) Summer School with rigorous training in fundamentals of AI and pairs it with hand-on experiential learning. The new curricula embodies and demonstrates the shifting landscape of AI research and innovation - the interdisciplinary training needed to support early career researchers and professionals. The new school’s scope and structure also reflects evolving priorities under the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy.
Designed for early PhD students and advanced Master’s students, the AI Safety Edition curriculum focuses on AI safety foundations and risks of advanced AI systems, tightly integrated with hands-on AI safety practice and culminating in a half-day red-teaming exercise. The design borrows pedagogically from research-led summer schools and Hackathon/Data Study Challenge models. It adapts and grounds it in the legacy of the DLRL Summer School optimizing for technical and socio-technical learning and applied safety thinking.
Important dates:
The deadline to submit your application is April 22, 2026 End of Day anywhere in Canada. Decisions will be issued by May 1, 2026.
